Who Is Jon Benson?
Jon Benson is basically “The Godfather” of copywriting and selling digital products online. He started building his online empire in 2004 when he released, Fit Over 40 and became a best-selling author. Since then, he’s published several other best-sellers and created the first video sales letter (VSL) in the digital marketing world.
The first “ugly” sales letter changed his world and so many other marketers he’s worked with. According to his website, “This creation propelled Jon to Internet marketing fame, and has since gone on to do well over $12B annually for marketers in virtually every online industry.”
Yes, 12 billion annually!
Since then, he’s spent much of his time mastering the art of copywriting. His approach is unlike any other thanks to his training in NLP (neurolinguistic programming) and psychology to create incredible results.
Today, I want to share some of his secrets with you, starting with how to write effective copy.
Copywriting 101 – The X Factor
You might be thinking, what exactly is copywriting anyways?
Here’s the definition from HubSpot,
“Copywriting consists of the words, either written or spoken, marketers use to try to get people to take an action after reading or hearing them. Copywriting is like a call-to-action, but on a bigger scale: Copywriters are trying to get people to feel, think, or respond — or, ideally, to Google the slogan or brand to learn more about the campaign.”
Copywriting is your “X” factor in your business.
It determines if people click on your ad and visit your webinar registration page. It determines if people open, read, and click your email marketing campaigns (or don’t.). Copy also determines if people go from fans and followers to paying customers.

My Story With Copywriting
Personally, I think that copywriting is the most needed piece of all sales online. Your copy (aka the words that you use in your marketing) is at the forefront of everything you do. Copy is the lifeblood of an online business.

3 Copywriting Tricks to Grow Your Business

1. Understand The Power of Psychology
One of the best traits among effective copywriters and successful entrepreneurs is understanding the power of psychology. By tapping into the psychology of buyers, you can make them more likely to purchase your offers, stay on webinars longer, and click on your ads at a higher rate.
While this is a massive topic that I couldn’t begin to write about in one post, we discussed two points in our interview that you can implement today; open loops and future pacing.
In our talk, Jon discussed the power of open loops when beginning your webinar. As he mentioned, you could start your webinar by saying, “Here’s how I stumbled on (Insert your webinar topic), here’s how I screwed it up and how I figured out how to do it right.”
By telling your audience that you found success but also “screwed it up” at the beginning, you’re creating an open loop. They want to know how you found success and what they can do as well.
This opening line also shows that you’re relatable as you “screwed” it up before you found success. This statement makes the audience feel as if you know exactly what situation they’re in and what problems they’re facing. Remember, your audience needs to know that you feel the pain they’re currently experiencing before purchasing your product.
Another great persuasive tool to add into your marketing is future pacing. This is a technique where you have your prospect imagine themselves in the future in an ideal situation.
For example, let’s say you’re selling a program on how to make better YouTube videos. On your webinar, you could future pace about how your offer will help them go from overworked, broke YouTuber to an authority in their niche. You could paint a picture of them being someone who makes high-quality videos that rank on YouTube, provide new leads daily, and create a thriving online business.
By taking your prospect into the future, you’re tapping into their imagination and subconscious mind. This will help tap into their emotions, which will help you convert more people and earn new revenue during webinars!
Plus, both of these concepts will help you keep your attendees engaged, which means they are more likely to hear your pitch.
2. Test Your Ideas Faster
In my nearly 10 years of being a digital entrepreneur, I’ve found that speed is vital to success. With so much changing at an unprecedented pace, if you don’t act now on your idea, it might be too late.
Jon agrees, saying that it’s time to quit thinking and waiting for everything to be perfect.
Instead, think about how fast you can take your idea to implementation using the “Ready, aim, fire” approach. Here’s the thing, most entrepreneurs sit around waiting for the right time. When in reality, you need to get your offers in front of more people as fast as possible and test everything in the real world.
Success as a digital entrepreneur is all about testing, even on a small scale, to see what works and what doesn’t with your audience.
A lot of times you might think you have an amazing idea, map it out, and it flops with your audience. Other times, you put out a product or offer with different messaging that you think is okay and is a huge success. You won’t know until you put your offer in the real world, so make sure to test as if your business depends on it (because it does).
Now, I’m not saying to invest your last $5,000 on Facebook ads tomorrow if you don’t have a proven offer. Instead, think about how you can start testing more frequently even on a smaller budget.
3. Keep Closing
Finally, don’t stop closing after you have pitched your offer during a sales webinar!
Something I’ve seen, and Jon mentions in our interview, is that so many entrepreneurs stop trying to close attendees after the pitch. A lot of the time presenters get into FAQs and start to wind down instead of running through the finish line.
Pitch until you stop the presentation!
Remember, just because people haven’t purchased for a few minutes doesn’t mean they won’t by the time your webinar is over. Sometimes they need a little push, some extra inspiration or are just trying to get their credit card info for your checkout page.
Instead of just rambling or coasting to the finish line, keep pitching. Let them know how the product you’re selling can help them get out of their pain and reach their goals.
As I mentioned in the beginning, copywriting is one of the most important parts of running an online business. These three tips can help you but it’s just the start.
